Nebraska Extends Safe Haven Law
August 25 2008
by adorable.com
While every US state has a safe haven law where babies can be left at a hospital with no questions asked, Nebraska has extended this to allow children of any age to be ´abandoned´.
Nebraska was the last state to adopt this law which is why it has surprised many that it has extended the scope of the safe-haven law up to age 19.
The concern is that this could be abused allowing parents frustrated with their unruly, difficult or disabled children to abandon them. While criminal charge would be bought against the parents if there were any signs of physical abuse, there would be no other questions asked.
This is sure to cause widespread debate and while at first glance it does seem to be giving unsuitable parents the chance to drop off their unwanted children, is it not better that they have that option before abusing their children?
